Breaking News Paul Newman's Rolex Daytona Becomes the World's Most Expensive Wristwatch Ever Sold. It Went For $17,752,500   Paul Newman Rolex Daytona

Paul Newman's very own Paul Newman Rolex Daytona has become the most expensive watch ever sold at auction, reaching $17,752,500 at Phillips in New York (including buyer's premium). Many many watch experts and aficionados thought the iconic watch would certainly break records and beat the most expensive Daytona ever sold and the most expensive Rolex ever sold. But this is a real surprise to see this iconic chronograph break the record for most expensive wristwatch ever.

This gold Daytona, known simply as "The Legend" fetched a whopping $3,717,906 is the most expensive Daytona ever sold

The Rolex reference 6062 "Bao Dai" just sold for $5,060,427, making it the most expensive Rolex ever sold at auction

The most expensive wristwatch ever sold publicly was a Patek Philippe 1518 in stainless steel until a couple of days ago. The Patek Philippe was the very first serially-produced perpetual calendar chronograph. Only four were made in stainless steel and it wasn't shocking at all to see it reach eight-figure heights. The 1518 Patek Philippe was also sold by Phillips in Geneva, and just a year ago in November 2016. While Paul Newman's Paul Newman Rolex certainly has the cool factor (provenance doesn't get better than this), for it to sell for more than this extremely rare and complicated Patek Philippe 1518 is truly surprising.

As a reminder, 2016 and especially 2017 have been difficult years for the sector: significant decline in sales and turnover, rotating chairs for the top management of various manufactures, several restructurations. In this context, does this record announce a recovery?

$17,752,500! Wow! Thank you for sharing @Stephane 🐝 Fenner.
