Tuesday Tricksters, Loot -- Male

So it's Tuesday again, and time for another edition of Tuesday Tricksters, words (homophones) that sound like at least one other word (or nearly so), but have different spellings and meanings. They can crop up in any writer's articles, so I just hope everyone continues to remember not to trust spellcheck to do more than it can.

Loot (v.): to plunder; strip of valuables; despoil; (n.): stolen money or goods

Lute (n.): an old stringed instrument related to the guitar

Lux (adj.): the International System unit of illumination, equal to one lumen per square meter

Luxe (n.): richness, elegance, luxury, or the like

Looks (v.): peers at; stares at; (n): one's appearance

Mac (n.): a shortened term for a Macintosh computer or Mackintosh raincoat; also a slang term for a male whose name you don't know (Hey, Mac!)

Mach (n.): (physics) a ratio of the speed (of an object, etc.) to the speed of sound in the fluid or other medium through which the object travels. Usually used to describe supersonic speeds.

Made (v.): past tense of to make

Maid (n.): a female who is hired to do domestic tasks; (archaic) a young unmarried female

Mail (adj.): related to the handling or delivery of letters and packages (mail carrier); (n.): letters, cards, papers and packages delivered by the postal service; (v.): to send something through the postal service

Male (adj.): belonging to the masculine gender; identifying one's gender as masculine; (n.): one of the masculine sex or gender
