Lauren McDonald shared a post on LI yesterday -- the one seen below -- and for a minute I thought the headline had a typo in it.聽

The headline read: "Why One Must Not Palter When Negotiating"

Yes, I thought the word was meant to be聽falter, which it might have been. So I looked up palter, just to confirm that I knew it had to be wrong.

Gotcha! Actually, GOT ME! Oops.聽

It's not a typo at all. But it is a word I'd never heard or seen before, as far as I can remember. It hasn't shown up in any crossword puzzles I've done, and it hasn't shown up on any quizzes either (at least, not yet). But it IS a perfectly good word, and I thought I'd pass it along, while also showing you the interesting original post from which it came.

Here are the definitions for palter, according to the American Heritage Dictionary (found on www.yourdictionary.com):

  • To talk or act insincerely or misleadingly; equivocate.
  • To be capricious; to trifle.
  • To quibble, especially in bargaining.

And from Wiktionary:

  • To talk insincerely; to prevaricate or equivocate in speech or actions.
  • (now rare) To聽trifle (with).
  • To聽haggle.
  • To聽babble; to chatter.

So, now you know. Go forth and spread the news!

Coming to this from your homophone post, firstly my reaction was a new word for me to squirrel away. Secondly palter would seem to sound like porter, a person carrying luggage, a dark brown beer, someone in charge of the entrance to a hotel, and someone in hospitals who moves people and equipment. 鈽猴笍鈽猴笍鈽猴笍鈽猴笍鈽猴笍鈽猴笍

Too funny, Praveen Raj Gullepalli! Yeah, palter is totally new to me. Now I only hope that it shows up as an answer in a crossword puzzle or maybe on the U.S. show Jeopardy! It would be nice to be able to recognize it and use it.
