Six questions to ask when selecting your roofing material

The decision of which roofing material to go with for your new roof shouldn’t be taken lightly. There are so many things you need to consider. Here are six questions you need to ask when deciding.

1. How long will it last? Along with this question, how long do you need it to last? Asphalt shingles tend to have the shortest lifespan but if you’re only going to be in your home another ten years or so, that might be enough.

2. How will it perform in my climate? Some roofing materials are better than others when it comes to warmer climates and some are better for colder climates. Areas prone to hail storms require materials with better impact ratings while areas prone to tornados need heavier materials.

3. Can my existing roof framing support it? Heavy materials like slate or concrete tile may be too heavy for your roof’s framing and may require some construction before the roof can be installed.

4. Will it look good for my home? Your roof should complement your home’s architecture. Tile roofs tend to go well with Spanish architecture, for instance. Some materials, like metal and composite roofs can be manufactured to look like other materials and are more versatile. Color also needs to be taken into consideration.

5. Do local building codes permit it? Some local building codes might prohibit certain materials, such as wood shakes. Your homeowner association may have their own restrictions as well.

6. How much will it cost? Some materials are a lot more expensive than others so you’ll always need to consider pricing.

Having trouble deciding? Ask a Spokane roofing company for advice since they’ll know the best materials for your climate, neighborhood, and circumstances.
