Serenity & The Awakening

Serenity & The Awakening

Serenity & The Awakening

Anticipation for a successful ELK bow hunt was exciting! Who cared it was a 16 hour drive to Idaho driving straight through! Was with a close friend and enjoyed the country through the mountains in Northern California, Nevada and into Idaho. So amazingly beautiful!!! Arrived in McCall staying on Lake Payette in a really nice cabin, the heck with roughing it! Only 30 minutes from the high country! I must be getting old!

Woke up next morning in the dark and we drove up to a spot on the topo map determined by our friends living up there also bow hunting. Climbed straight up the mountain, very steep huffing and buffing at 8000 ft. My body is very fit, working out at the gym doing cardio and weights four times a week. Kind of buffed you would say at my age. I soon realized I was gym fit but my lungs did not cooperate!!! If I was going to have a heart attack then it was then or never!!!!!!

We finally reached our spot overlooking a large meadow carved out on the side steep ridge! The sun started peeking through the horizon and the forest came alive. The critters came out to get some morning breakfast, chipmunks, squirrels, a badger, hawks overhead and some deer grazing below. Had a chipmunk come out on branch only inches from my face? He looked like he was thinking what the hell you are doing here!!!! Chirped and went on his way, got to eat! He was so cute to see him stuff himself with nuts.

I closed my eyes and just enjoyed the sun on my face, a slight wind in my face and the forest whispering to me! So peaceful! I started to review my life, my family and my journey to where I am now. Reflecting on the important things in my life and the not so important that sometimes engulfs our time. I repeated this routine for five days changing locations mornings and evenings, each as if I was writing a chapter to a book.

The last evening of the hunt the sun was setting, just enjoying the beauty around me, the wind kicking up whistling around me in the pines. I had closed my eyes and thinking about the trip back and the craziness of the city awaiting me! Then the thump, crash from above and at least a two pound pine cones nearly hits me!!! A big old ass squirrel yelling at me from above! Then again, another bomb released!!!! Get the hell away from my tree he was saying, really pissed!!!! I said ok dude, I will move!!! I looked back and he was standing up on his branch just looking at me and thinking I just kicked your butt old man!!! I smiled and moved, I did not want to mess with this critter! A perfect ending to my hunt!!! No elk in the freezer but just memories! Yes, above right is his tree!!!! If you see this tree, don’t park your butt there!!!
