£Competitive + bonus + benefits

This is a wide-ranging role for a bright, motivated and ambitious lawyer to grow and thrive in a company that is leading the way in energy transformation through innovation and disruption.

You will work closely with the Group Head of Legal on a broad range of commercial legal matters. These will initially be focused on support to Kaluza, our new and growing B2B intelligent grid technology platform business which is leading the digital transformation of the electricity system. Kaluza’s mission is to securely connect all devices to an intelligent zero carbon grid and facilitate a global transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Its initial focus is on the roll-out of smart electric vehicle chargers, smart home battery storage systems and intelligent electric heating controls to consumers across the UK.

For Kaluza you will work closely with our business development teams, and primarily lead on a wide range of B2B contractual arrangements, tech development and commercialisation, IP licensing and protection and data protection.

You will also support closely on other Group-level new business ventures, including technology development, international expansion and occasional corporate projects (e.g. acquisitions/investments/joint ventures).

Skills and Experience

OVO is a dynamic, innovative and fast-paced business that operates in a highly regulated industry where the rules are complex and constantly changing. In that environment it is essential that OVO Legal strikes the perfect balance between technical precision and commercial agility.

Every team member therefore takes pride in applying top-class legal brains in a highly commercial and constructive way, building strong relationships both within the business and externally, and ultimately being courageous in finding a way to achieve OVO’s vision and goals.

Legal / commercial skills:

3 - 7 years’ PQE (although aptitude and culture-fit will be given significantly greater weight than PQE).

Training in a reputable firm, together with significant experience in a strong in-house team.

Deep experience of drafting and negotiating a range of B2B commercial contracts. These will include bespoke collaboration agreements, supply of goods and services, device installation, technology licensing, data sharing arrangements, and grant funding projects.

A strong understanding of contract law, intellectual property and data protection will be key.

Some experience of corporate transactions and an awareness of the basics of consumer protection law and regulation would be a plus.

Excellent drafting and technical legal analysis skills.

General skills:

Strong team player who can also work comfortably autonomously and manage own workload.

Highly commercial and constructive problem solving abilities. The OVO Legal team prides itself on ‘finding a way’.

Highly responsive and pro-active – we build bridges as well as fight fires.

Strong, articulate communicator – written and oral. Must be able to convey complex points plainly and succinctly.

Ability to juggle a diverse workload and rapidly shifting priorities.

A well-rounded personality with the capacity to work effectively with others from a wide range of professional and non-professional disciplines.

Sound common-sense judgement and a willingness to operate out of his or her comfort zone, with confidence to challenge when required.

Capable of quickly gaining trust and confidence of managers and directors across the business.

Highly organised and process-focused - but retaining flexibility to adapt to others’ ways of working and OVO’s agile culture.

Comfortable working with and learning a range of new business applications and e-business tools to drive efficiency.

We celebrate diversity and value equal opportunity; the more inclusive we are, the better our work will be. We want to build a team which represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills, and we decide employment on the basis of merit and potential.

We were set up to always find a better way and challenge the status quo: we want to be the good guys, find a way, and build something great. We embrace simplicity, transparency, and treating people and our planet fairly. We understand that attracting and keeping the best talent is key to our bright future, so our people will always share in our success. Our benefits are pretty nice too
