Why this role matters

This role involves working within the Pensions Legal team to provide specialist pensions law advice and best in class service to our internal BT stakeholders.

The Pensions Legal team provides strategic and commercial pensions legal support, in particular to the Pensions Risk, Pensions Policy, employment, Workforce Management and M&A teams. Its work not only concerns issues with the BT Pension Scheme - one of the UK’s largest private sector pension scheme - and BT Retirement Savings Scheme, but also the EE Pension Scheme and a number of other schemes. The team also advises on M&A, public sector outsourcing work, legal/regulatory changes and on death benefit issues. Its work involves both pensions litigation and non-contentious matters.

What you'll be doing

Advising on both contentious and non-contentious pensions legal matters, including (where appropriate) handling your own matters and interacting directly with our internal stakeholders, largely in Finance and HR, as appropriate.

Carrying out and reporting on legal research and other tasks to support senior lawyers in the team

Ensuring you keep up to date with new case law, legislation and other developments within the pensions industry generally and

supporting education and awareness activities aimed at our stakeholders in relation to the same

Providing support in relation to the management of the Pensions Legal team including to ensure efficient management of external legal spend budget

Actively monitoring and providing support to ensure standards of work undertaken by external firms/counsel

Building relationships within BT Legal and also with our key internal stakeholders in HR and Finance

Supporting relationships with key external stakeholders, in particular BT Pension Scheme Management

Championing knowledge management including through supporting the continual development of an established pensions database as a valuable and up-to-date BT pensions resource

Ensuring understanding of BT’s business objectives and striving to support their delivery

Acting as an ambassador for BT and BT Legal, promoting the company/team and demonstrating BT’s values

You will have a keen interest in pensions law and in building up a detailed knowledge of pensions within BT

You will have excellent legal research skills and a keen eye for detail with the ability to present your findings clearly and concisely

You will have a commercial and curious mindset and be able to prioritise work and meet deadlines

You will be a strong team player who demonstrates determination and passion to work with the rest of the team to deliver excellent support to the business, doing so with confidence and integrity.

You will inspire confidence through personal ownership of matters (where appropriate) and also through supporting senior lawyers within the team on larger projects. You will seek to identify and suggest solutions rather than just articulating the problem; and pursue positive outcomes rather than follow process.

You will be an excellent communicator with strong written skills and able to set out written advice to stakeholders which is clear, accurate and concise.

You will also have good oral communication skills both in terms of your interactions with legal colleagues and with our internal and external stakeholders (where appropriate).

You will be keen to understand how we as a Pensions Legal team ultimately support the BT customer and to become actively involved in initiatives in the wider legal and pensions teams
