Within the Respiratory, Autoimmunity and Inflammation (RIA) research group in Cambridge UK, we have an opportunity for a highly motivated in vitro Epithelial Cell Biologist to provide hands on support to our drug development projects. Depending on your experience, we will consider hiring you as a Scientist I or Scientist II. Ideally, you have a deep understanding of Epithelial Biology, preferably in respiratory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. In this role, you would be expected to demonstrate an exceptionally high level of enthusiasm for creative scientific research leading to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics. Expertise in epithelial cell biology, tissue repair, and/or complex co-culture systems and cell imaging, and an ability to apply this experience to an understanding of the basic mechanisms of human lung disease would be a great asset.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
This job is a lab-based research role, and you will have significant opportunity to drive the direction of the work. The work will be predominantly human in vitro systems, working with primary and disease tissue-derived cells, although knowledge and expertise in in-vivo science is a bonus. A background in human translational approaches to understand basic biological mechanisms in disease is a plus but not essential. You will need to be able to demonstrate a clear ability to collaborate well with others, such as:
Driving target validation through to drug project, by discovery of novel biological mechanistic understanding
Implementing novel technical advances with human tissue such as air-liquid interface, 3D co-culture systems, imaging and monitoring epithelial integrity
Collaboration with scientists from a variety of functional teams in Cambridge and with our site in Gaithersburg, USA
PhD with post-doctoral experience in academia or industry
Extensive work in epithelial cell culture systems e.g. Air-Liquid Interface, which demonstrates a clear practical ability and scientific proficiency
Experience in vitro and ex-vivo models to understand mechanisms important in establishing epithelial repair and/or epithelial and immune cell interactions
Highly organized and self-motivated, with the ability to work well as part of a team
Experience with 1 or more of the following areas would be helpful but is not a requirement
Imaging of complex cell biology
Work with primary cells including tissue disaggregation and complex culture
Experience of in vivo models of lung damage, chronic inflammation or infection of lung
Understanding of other organ repair biology, such as intestinal epithelium
Deep understanding of translation of mechanistic findings to human disease
Keeps up with broader current scientific literature
Successful team working and partnering skills
Scientific creativity and ability to drive own research ideas to a successful conclusion, proven by strong publication record or project progression
Excellent written, oral, presentation and inter-personal skills
Drive for constant personal development and increasing skill base
