Job Purpose :

To provide high quality effective site services to ensure a secure, safe and hygienic environment for both our staff and pupils.

Job Context :

To be responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, caretaking and maintenance of equipment and school building.

The post is required to work with tools, cleaning equipment and products which contain chemicals, but the necessary protective clothing will be provided. Also required to work outdoors in all weathers to ensure the school premises is safe.

The role will require daily interaction with both staff and pupils and we are looking for a friendly and personable character for the role.

Enhanced DBS check is required for this post due to working within a school environment.

Main responsibilities :

Operational Issues :

To ensure the security of the building and site, undertaking daily security checks

Act as a designated key holder, providing response to emergency calls.

Locking and unlocking of buildings at pre-determined times

To monitor the heating system so that the required temperatures are maintained in the school building and an adequate supply of hot water is available.

Carry out routine procedures or checks on ancillary equipment e.g. fire alarms/equipment, water checks, checking batteries, automatic pumps and areas subject to flooding

To ensure outside areas are safe / clean, kept free from litter, debris, leaves and that there is safe access to the building during adverse weather conditions eg. snow.

To maintain the small grounds of the school (grass cutting / potting plants)

To assist with cleaning duties as directed

Collect and assemble waste for collection

To support the maintenance of the building by checking and replacing light fittings.

Carry out first line repairs i.e.undertaking minor repairs (not requiring a contractor) of a range of equipment and buildings not beyond the scope and capability of the postholder and to include:- Basic plumbing work – e.g. repairing a leaking pipe, unblocking sinks, simple installation work such as plumbing a new tap, or replacing washers etc

Monitoring of heating system and controls

Minor repairs to school furniture and classroom equipment

Painting and decorating as appropriate

Putting up display boards (which might mean working at height)

Repairing cracked or broken plaster, making good damaged walls e.g. following the removal of shelving or similar fittings

Fencing repairs e.g. mending broken fencing panels or stakes

Glazing work, such as replacing smaller windows, re-beading or re-puttying glass panes, internal and external.

Ensure that all drains and gullies are free flowing and clean

Basic electrical work

Communications :

Communicate effectively with other members of staff and pupils within the school.

Welcome contractors onto the site and check clearances

Resource Management :

Store equipment and products safely and securely

Ability to carry out informal risk assessments on buildings to identify faults/hazards

Order, stock control and store cleaning and caretaking equipment and products safely and securely

Safeguarding :

To be committed to safeguarding and promote the welfare of children, young people and adults, raising concerns as appropriate.

Systems and Information :

To fulfil the necessary administrative tasks associated with the responsibilities of the post.

Data protection :

To comply with the school’s policies and supporting documentation in relation to Data Protection, Information Security and Confidentiality.

Health and Safety :

Be aware of and implement your health and safety responsibilities as an employee and where appropriate any additional specialist or managerial health and safety responsibilities as defined in the Health and Safety policy and procedure.

To work with colleagues and others to maintain health, safety and welfare within the working environment.

Perform duties in line with health & safety regulations (COSHH) and take action where hazards are identified, reporting serious hazards to line manager immediately
