Stanlow is a key strategic national asset, annually producing over 16% of the UK’s road transport fuels, while playing an important part in Britain’s petrochemical industry by providing key feedstocks.
The business is a major supplier in the North West and beyond with customers including most of the major retail brands operated by international oil companies and supermarkets, Manchester Airport, leading commercial airlines and the region’s trains and buses.

They currently have an exciting opportunity for a well-established Tax Professional to join their lean Tax Team in the Finance Department, reporting directly to the Head of Finance. The role has overall responsibility and management of the corporate tax process. This responsibility includes, guiding and advising the UK leadership and the wider business on appropriate and optimised tax and excise exposure and fulfilment; ensuring compliance to UK regulations and reporting standards and ensuring tax liability risk is mitigated.
The role holder will be required to take the lead and steer the Company through the development and implementation of best practice for the management of taxes, while identifying, assessing and implementing tax optimisation opportunities. This role will also be critical to any future Company acquisitions and re-organisations, including strategic leadership on conducting due diligence exercises on potential targets.
The role will be the Company’s representation for external stakeholders, including HMRC, Government and relevant trade bodies. It will use these interactions to monitor changes to taxation, and provide guidance and support of their impact to internal stakeholders.
Along with high level activities, the role will be responsible for the timely filing of various VAT, Excise Duty, Customs-related Returns, Direct Tax Returns, QIPS with HMRC; ensuring timely payment of Income Tax, VAT, Customs Duty and Excise Duty. It will also provide support on IM transactions (Inventory Monetisation) and Receivable Securitisation or similar working capital facilities roll over or refinancing, while ensuring overall tax compliance in all respects of direct, indirect tax such as fiscal metering, correct tax coding.
Their ideal candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree and a Professional Tax qualification, such as the Chartered Institute of Taxation along with extensive tax experience dealing with high values. Their successful candidate will be extremely conversant with Corporate Tax associated rules. Additional tax knowledge and experience would be beneficial.
The successful candidate will need a proven track record of meeting commitments with the highest standards of ethics and integrity, the ability and resilience to drive solutions to complex operational and financial issues and be comfortable working in a team-oriented environment that is fast paced and demanding.
You will be a confident self-starter with strong communication skills; versatile in applying UK Tax Laws and Rules with experience of dealing with complex cross-border transactions. Their successful candidate will have a continuous focus on business changes and be able to correlate the impact on taxes, and lead the process to introduce these changes to the business.
