Established in 1949 by the Washington State Legislature, the Washington State Human Rights Commission is the state agency responsible for administering and enforcing the Washington State Law Against Discrimination. As one of five Commissioner's I provided policy direction to the agency, adopted state regulations, and met monthly to pass upon the investigative finding determinations recommended by staff. I reviewed and approved settlement agreements, and issued Commission Orders setting forth the terms of the legally binding agreements. The Commissioners' act as a quasi judicial body that votes to grant or deny requests for reconsideration (appeals) of previously issued investigative findings submitted by agency investigative staff. Commissioners take a leading role and are charged with rule making for legislation under the Revised Code of Washington (RCW 49.60).
