About the PositionReporting to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs of the Lucas College of Business and receiving work lead direction from the Director of the JHSSC, the Academic Advisor will provide moderately complex, consistent and accurate student services support for the JHSSC with limited supervision in a high-volume and fast-paced work environment. Such services include: providing information and advising to current and prospective students through academic planning and successful paths to graduation, helping students find solutions for issues they may face, collaborating with relevant constituents to advocate for student needs, informing and referring students to relevant university services and resources, coordinating student success programs, events and projects of the JHSSC.
Required Qualifications-Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral
sciences, public or business administration or a job related field
- Two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a
related field. A master's degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the
Preferred Qualifications- Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Counseling, Student
Affairs, or related area
- Experience working in an advising office/center, preferably a high volume and fast-paced work
- Experience working with students, staff, faculty and administrators from a diverse background
- Experience with university and college advising policies and procedures
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of University policies, major, GE and system requirements for graduation
- Knowledge of basic principles of individual and group behavior, and techniques and methods
of interviewing students for the purposes of holistic academic advising
-Ability to effectively draft and compose correspondence and standard reports in writing
-Ability to motivate and advocate for students
-Ability to coordinate and lead outreach activities and work with teams to develop and present
