Job Description:

Reports To: Dean of Students/Vice President of Student Life
Supervises: Student Success Coordinator, season/temp staff and student employees

Summary of Position:
Reporting to the Dean of Students/Vice President of Student Life, the Assistant Dean of Students provides leadership and vision for the following areas within the Division of Student Life: first year and transfer bridge programs, conflict resolution and Restorative Justice Initiatives, and campus wide equity, inclusion, and recognitions efforts with a particular focus on programs and that increase retention and engagement of our diverse student community. This position serves as a central resource to address issues of inclusion and equity and contributes to a more equitable campus climate through policy consultation and capacity building for students, and secondarily for faculty and staff. The Assistant Dean leads the divisional partnerships with students, faculty, and staff in the development and implementation of student leadership initiatives, efforts focused on social justice & equity co-curricular activities and educational opportunities. This position serves to infuse principals of excellence to enhance our work with all Mills students acknowledging the particular experiences of our limited income, first generation, and historically marginalized populations. In particular, the Assistant Dean collaborates with Academic Affairs in the design, implementation and assessment of the bridge programs and faculty partnerships including the Summer Academic Workshop (SAW) for first-generation, limited income first year students, the Oakland Leadership Academy, and collaboration with the Hellman Program.

Essential Job Functions:

- Serve as the lead Division of Student Life representative in the partnerships with academic departments and administrative offices in order to develop and deliver co-curricular programs and services that support the engagement, retention and graduation of students.
- Develop and implement policies, programming and educational opportunities that build capacity around student engagement, leadership, inclusion, equity and social justice and enhance student retention and sense of belonging.
- Serve as a resource or consultant for information and knowledge concerning student engagement, and equity for students, faculty and staff within the Division of Student Life and the larger campus community.
- Manage administrative and budgetary matters related to the duties of the position for the Division of Student Life efforts in programmatic responsibility areas.
- Meet with the Dean to provide information or obtain advice, consultation or support as needed; represent the Dean at meetings and other activities as requested by the Dean.
- Design and provide resources that enhance students' personal, academic, and social identity development with a comprehensive lens to the diverse student experience including but not limited to limited income, first generation, and historically marginalized populations.
- As a member of the Division of Student Life, provide event support for campus-wide programs and attending events on behalf of the division and as a representative of the Dean of Students.
- As a member of the Division Leadership Team, participate in department and division meetings for project planning, policy development and direction setting.
- Serve on Divisional and campus-wide committees as required.
- Maintain safe work conditions and comply with established safety policies, practices, procedures, and requirements.
- Represent Mills College and the Division of Student Life in a variety of forums on- and off-campus; attend, conduct or participate in a variety of meetings as assigned.
- Promote and sustain effective working relationships within a diverse and multicultural environment.
- The incumbent is expected to establish and maintain an effective customer service orientation. This includes maintaining and protecting confidentiality of information.

Education and Training:

- Master's degree in higher education, counseling, student development or related field
- 5-7 years of progressive experience in higher education

Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands:

- Work involves week-end and evening availability.
- At times, the incumbent will be sitting for long hours and using computers.
- Hearing and speaking are required for communication.
- Work can be both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather.
- Work often requires flexibility in terms of time, and physical demands.
- Work occasionally requires physical exertion such as lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds.
- Interruptions and meeting with a variety of people will be required on a regular basis.
- There are a number of deadlines and multiple requirements associated with this position, which may cause significant stress.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, exempt position with an FTE of 1.0. Salary is commensurate with experience, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with college-matching after 6 month qualifying period, 10 days of vacation for year one, 15 days of vacation for years 2-10, and 22 days of vacation years 10+ plus, 12 sick days and 17 paid holidays (subject to annual review).
