Project Overview:

Bechtel is designing, constructing, and commissioning the world’s largest radioactive-waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington State. The project will use vitrification technology to process and stabilize 56 million gallons (212 million liters) of radioactive and chemical waste stored at the Hanford Site which is a byproduct of plutonium production during World War II and the Cold War era.


The cleanup project is one of DOE’s most technically challenging and the largest undertaking of its kind—equivalent to building two nuclear power plants. The construction site spans 65 acres (26 hectares) and includes facilities for pretreatment, low-activity waste vitrification, high-level waste vitrification, and the analytical laboratory – as well as operations and maintenance buildings, utilities, and other support facilities.


Positions located at the Construction Site (22 miles north of Richland) work a 4 x 10 schedule, M-Th, 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other work locations may work a 9-80’s schedule, M-F 7:00 am to 4:30 pm with alternating Fridays off. Extended hours as needed.



The selected candidate for this position will have cybersecurity responsibilities as they relate to an Industrial Control System (ICS). These responsibilities focus on performing work to provide a highly available and secure environment that meets the government mandated cyber security requirements (e.g., Risk Management Framework) in accordance with appropriate standards, (e.g. NIST SP 800-53, 800-82, etc).  This position also includes supporting necessary security controls and enhancements on the control systems; supporting project policy, plan and procedure development; planning disaster and recovery; adhering to configuration management; supporting cybersecurity related drawings (e.g., boundary drawings, etc) and cybersecurity input to specifications.  In the work environment, the candidate will need to work closely with senior engineers, IS&T and cybersecurity professionals to achieve a common goal.



From an ICS perspective, the selected candidate will be required to perform the following duties: Develop, review and coordinate documents with suppliers, other disciplines and customers. Coordinates technical issues with Senior engineers.  Proficient with basic engineering deliverables such as drawings, specifications, calculations, and Distributed Control System (DCS)/Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) configurations. Knowledgeable of major regulations and industry codes and standards applicable to Instrumentation and Controls. Properly interprets and applies codes & standards and customer design requirements in the preparation of Control Systems design products. Responsibilities include the following: marking up Piping & Instrument Diagrams and Logic Diagrams for control and instrumentation requirements. Develops network architecture diagrams. Contributes to maintaining the project’s instrument database using automated tools and has knowledge of the applicability of information to be populated in the instrument database. Achieves work process improvement and promotes continuous work process improvement. The Engineer shall champion non-proprietary electronic data interchange and integrate automation technology where ever practical.


Basic Requirements:

BS degree from a US accredited institution in Computer Science, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Computer or Electro-Mech engineering with 3 year of related experience;  or in lieu of education 7 years of experience in Control Systems Engineering.
Candidate must possess the right to work and remain in the U.S. without sponsorship.

 Minimum Requirements:

Working knowledge of control systems hardware, software and network design (topology, block diagrams, etc)
Working knowledge of knowledge of Logic Diagrams and Automation support for Plant Control Systems (DCS’s, PLC’s etc.)
General knowledge of control system protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Modbus, DNP3, etc)
Hands on Microsoft office programs, VISIO, and other computer programs
