What You Will Do:

General Summary

Under general supervision, perform and manage special education diagnostic and training activities/ services for child psychiatric inpatient population for UMMC.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

- Manages the operations of theInpatientChildPsychiatrySchool for emotional and behavioral disturbed children assuring compliance with Maryland State Department of Education and other regulatory and certification requirements.Establishes educational administrative procedures and evaluates effectiveness of child psych educational programs. Provides teaching/preceptor responsibilities to education students, psychology interns, medical students, residents and nursing students.In conjunction with the Patient Care Services Manager participates in performance improvement projects and research initiatives.Maintains financial responsibility for the school -- managing the budget ensuring pre-established limitations are adhered to.Monitors and ensures compliance with The Joint Commission and Maryland State Department Education regulations (e.g. fire codes and OSHA guidelines for general health and safety).Oversees and directs the daily work activities of BaltimoreCity public school teacher in the child psychiatry partial hospitalization program and UMMC school staff. Provides input into performance evaluations.Evaluates and teaches inpatients with severe emotional disturbances and learning disabilities to assist students in maintaining schoolwork during hospitalization. Facilitates return to school in accordance with standards established and monitored by the Maryland State Department of Education's division of special education.Performs educational and psychoeducational testing, assists with determination of learning disabilities and instructional levels using standardized test instruments.Diagnoses specific learning disabilities via psychoeducational testing and consultation with students' referring schools.Monitors patients' psychiatric conditions in inpatient school to assess possible school dysfunction following discharge.Teaches core academic subjects (math, reading, written language, science and social studies).Recommends methods to better serve special students upon returning them to the standard school setting.Develops and implements educational curricula and behavioral management programs for psychiatric inpatients to maximize patients' school experience while hospitalized.Designs educational curriculum to include core academic subjects as required by the Maryland State Department of Education. Develops and coordinates behavior management programs in conjunction with inpatient staff for consistency and continuity in education and psychological treatment.Provides in-service and teaching methodology training seminars to staff members in departments of Psychiatry and Nursing. Educates staff on learning disabilities and their effects on behavior. Teaches multi-sensory, kinesthetic techniques to help learning disabled children during their hospitalization.Teaches multidiscipline students, psychology interns and externs the multitude of developmental disabilities.Provides consultation to public and private mental health agencies, such as, the Department of Social Services and Department of Juvenile Services, regarding educational placement and special programs following discharge.Provides consultation to public and private educational agencies recommending class level placement, instructional levels, special services and teaching techniques for specific students.

What You Need to Be Successful:

Education and Experience

- Master's degree in Special Education/Educational Psychology is required. (Advanced professional certification at the master's level by the Maryland State Department of Education is required.)
- Five years experience in a psychiatric hospital performing designing and delivering special education programs to children is required. Experience in/with the public and private school systems, legal system and welfare system is required.
