General Description of the Job Class

To support Duke University Health System and the Duke Heart Center by ensuring that electrocardiograms performed within Duke University Health System are diagnostically valuable. This vital task involves maintaining patient information using the computerized ECG system, creating preliminary interpretations for each ECG, alerting Cardiology Faculty ECG Readers about ECG findings that are potentially dangerous for patients, ensuring that ECGs are correlated with electronic orders, and communicating with ECG technicians to improve and maintain the quality of ECGs.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

To operate data processing equipment to enter and retrieve a variety of patient data; to edit data to ensure consistency and accuracy

To interpret ECGs and to enter preliminary interpretations into the computerized database.

To alert Cardiology Faculty ECG Readers about ECG findings that are potentially dangerous for patients.

To achieve Quality Improvement: The Editors will work in concert with the Clinical Operations Supervisor of the EKG Support Unit to achieve and maintain excellence in the quality of ECG recordings. The Editors will recognize and when possible correct errors involved with ECG recording, analysis and storage—including misidentification of patients, incorrect lead placement (including limb lead reversals), technically poor tracings, incorrect diagnoses, and incorrect reasons for obtaining the ECG.

To interact with hospital information systems to ensure that confirmed ECGs are entered properly into the electronic medical record system.

To interface with ECG and electronic medical record databases to locate and retrieve lost information.

To perform routine database checks for the computer system, and to report system malfunctions to appropriate service personnel.

To compile and distribute ECG tracings, reports and other data as required, using Epic, copier and fax technologies.

To communicate with technical staff regarding issues of ECG quality and patient safety, and to assist in the resolution of problems.

To recommend and implement new standards, procedures and techniques to improve existing diagnostic methods.

To communicate with physicians, research personnel and staff regarding problem resolution and advice pertinent to ECG procedures, techniques and equipment.

To interface with departmental personnel to solve problems concerning patient care, departmental policy and treatment procedures relating to electrocardiogram.

To assist in the training of new personnel.

To perform other duties as requested by EKG Support Unit Supervisors or Medical Directors.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education:

High School graduate or GED.

Experience:

Minimum of two years as an ECG Technician II or related ECG experience with competence deemed sufficient by the Clinical Operations Supervisor and Medical Directors of the EKG Support Unit.

Minimum of 1 year of reading ECGs under the supervision of current ECG Editors and EKG Support Unit Medical Directors.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:

Successful completion:

1) Duke ECG Certification by the EKG Support Unit Medical

Directors within one year of being hired as an ECG Editor.

2) Basic 12-Lead class;

3) Dysrhythmia class;

4) Pacemaker class

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to interpret ECGs and to use computer equipment to enter interpretations into an ECG database. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Working knowledge of the relevant anatomy and physiology integral to the generation and recording of the ECG. Ability to work under pressure, multitask and to accept responsibility for quality and accuracy.
