Counseling Intern

Tracking Code200277 Job DescriptionThis internship is designed as a hands-on experience containing many intersecting points with students, faculty and staff. Counselor interns function as academic advisors, teachers, mental health Counselors, career Counselors, consultants, and student advocates. Counselors interns serve students individually through walk-in sessions, appointments, advising desk, telephone calls, e-mail and other distance-advising tools. As members of the professional Counseling Center team, Counselor interns have the opportunity to participate in and develop initiatives related to counseling and student engagement. Counselor interns can expect the Counselor Center team to be fully committed to engaging with interns and enhancing their professional development, counseling skills and growth.


Counseling interns work under the mentorship and supervision of a professional counselor. Mentors will maintain periodic contact with graduate program advisers or internship supervisors regarding intern progress. It is expected that graduate program advisers or internship supervisors will be accessible and actively engaged in communication with program mentors. While program flexibility does afford arrangement of a schedule that best matches the needs of both interns and the Counseling Center, a 7-10 month internship commitment (approximately 2 semesters) is requisite for all candidates, due to the extensive training required. Weekly hours and total program hours are based on those required by the intern's graduate program. This internship program does not provide a scholarship, stipend or salary; however, intern participation in college workshops/trainings and some counselor-related professional development activities may be financially supported by JCCC. It is expected that interns will operate in an ethical and professional manner and that they participate fully in all opportunities as reasonably agreed upon.


Interested candidates are expected to job shadow a member of the Intern Selection Committee prior to interviewing for the position. Upon receipt of a completed application for the position, candidates will be contacted to arrange a job shadowing experience.
