Reporting to the Director of the Special Collections Research Center (SCRC), the Digital Archivist will lead efforts to acquire, preserve, and provide access to born-digital and digitized archival and special collections materials. In partnership with the Head of Digital Services and other members of the William & Mary Libraries’ Digital Services Advisory Group, the Digital Archivist will be part of digital program development, including providing vision and support for SCRC’s online presence and collection management system and William & Mary Libraries’ digital archive. The Digital Archivist will collaborate with library and campus partners to develop a comprehensive digital preservation plan for William & Mary and provide leadership in assessing preservation and access needs for digital content. The successful candidate will coordinate the transfer of digital materials from a variety of current and legacy media formats such as tape, floppy disks, CDs, and hard drives, and will implement mechanisms for ensuring the authenticity, preservation and access of this material. He/she will work closely with the University Archivist to develop processes for the routine acquisition, preservation, and access of born-digital materials created by William & Mary, including email, websites, social media, and other electronic records. The Digital Archivist will arrange and describe archives and manuscript collections in both paper and digital format. Supervision of students, volunteers, and interns is required. Regular reference shifts and desk coverage and assistance with special collections instruction is required.
Required Qualifications•Master’s degree in Library Science, Archival Science, or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program (or its foreign equivalent) with an emphasis in archives and technology, or a graduate degree with relevant experience in archives and technology.
•Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and inclusion.
•Demonstrated knowledge of digital archives and digital curation practices.
•Demonstrated knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices.
Preferred Qualifications•Knowledge of archival management systems, such as ArchivesSpace.
•Familiar with digital archiving tools and protocols, such as BitCurator, BagIt, Tar, writeblockers, and the Wayback Machine.
•Familiar with digital repository systems and exhibition software including DSpace, Islandora, Omeka, and MediaWiki.
•Awareness of preservation repository systems and services such as, Archive-It, Archivematica, LOCKSS, DuraSpace, and APTrust.
•Fluency in Spanish is a plus for the Cuban Film Project.
