Operates one or more types of medium to heavy duty motorized and automotive equipment and one or more types of motorized and automotive equipment and a variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of the City's public works infrastructure.
Examples of Duties
•Operates a variety of automotive equipment to include tandem dump trucks, concrete mixers, sand spreaders, mowers, slope mowers, asphalt rollers and front loaders (tire).
•Operates a variety of hand tools to include shovels, rakes, pick axes and string line trimmers.
•Inspects, services and performs minor repairs on automotive equipment.
•Assists in loading and unloading materials and equipment and cleaning up work areas.
•Performs related duties as required.
Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED is preferred. A minimum of three (3) years of experience operating equipment as listed above; ability to demonstrate proficiency in the operation of equipment required; ability to work independently and set and follow priorities; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with the general public and other personnel. General knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of automotive and motorized equipment and the use of hand tools and equipment. Must possess a State of Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a valid State of Virginia Driver's License and obtain the CDL within 180 days of employment. Must have a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Any person offered employment in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances. Any person offered employment in this position shall be required to successfully complete a Virginia Criminal Background Check.
Performs duties under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor; receives direction from crew leaders. Occasional overtime, evening, weekend and holiday work is required. Incumbent is subject to call-out and may be required to carry an electronic signaling device which enables him/her to respond to emergency situations. This is a non-exempt position.
