Description

The Genentech Foundation, the philanthropic foundation of Genentech, Inc., is seeking an Executive Director (ED). The ED will drive strategy and operations in order to deliver on the Foundation’s newly launched mission of creating sustainable career pathways in biotechnology for underserved youth and adults.
The individual in this role will develop an innovative portfolio of high-impact grants and will develop measurement, engagement and communications strategies in support of that mission and vision. The ED will also work closely with Corporate Relations colleagues and will support select CR priorities and special projects (such as Genentech Gives Back Week) as appropriate.
The ideal candidate is curious, collaborative, and passionate with strong critical thinking skills, philanthropic expertise, and a proven ability to create and implement strategy.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Translate the Foundation’s vision and mission within selected focus areas (Educational Pathways, Workforce Development, and Safety Net Innovations) into a sustainable strategic plan (12-18 months) including:
Assess and design solutions for learning needs
Create a portfolio strategy that will balance risk/impact/effort across all of the Foundation’s focus areas
Determine and measure success metrics
Develop employee engagement approach to leverage Genentech’s expertise and passion in compliant ways
Lead development of communications strategy (in close collaboration with Corporate Relations colleagues) to highlight the Foundation’s contributions and galvanize other funders in the sector.
Fulfill all leadership responsibilities to ensure the Genentech Foundation continues on its current path of transformative philanthropic partnerships.
Recruit, train and engage Board members regularly. Facilitate the highest impact experience during their tenure, leveraging their unique expertise, networks and leadership to further Foundation objectives in fresh and innovative ways. Oversee committee structure and quarterly meetings, ensuring these engagements inform the Board’s decision-making in meaningful ways.
Directly oversee 1 full time contractor and other consultants as needed. Provide quarterly guidance and oversight to voluntary staff.
Fulfill all managerial responsibilities to ensure all criteria and SOPs are met (financial, governance, legal) and that the Foundation continues to operate according to philanthropic best practice.
Working with staff, research and perform due diligence and prepare materials for Board consideration at quarterly meetings. Including:
Develop and present specific recommendations on grant requests
Provide context and content for discussion around emerging focus areas
Educate Board members and facilitate exploration of future areas for potential Foundation engagement
Ensure payment and tracking of all grants approved by the Board
Perform Corporate Relations charitable work as determined by the Director of Corporate & Charitable Giving.
Partner with the head of Corporate & Employee Giving to ensure seamless alignment between Genentech’s Corporate Charitable Giving and the Genentech Foundation.
Support and contribute to a culture of collaboration within the Corporate & Employee Giving team as well as the broader Corporate Relations team (e.g., Media Relations, Internal Communications, Digital, etc.)
SUCCESS IN THIS POSITION REQUIRES:

Proven ability to translate future vision and strategic focus into real, actionable plans and programs
Compelling executive presence with an ability to serve as a trusted counsel to senior leadership, consistently anticipating and addressing areas of concern
Established philanthropic leadership
Ability to influence without direct authority even at the organizational level
Outstanding oral, written and presentation skills; comfort in presenting to and interacting with senior executives across the company
Excellent people management skills, with the ability to coach and support direct reports in skills and career development to benefit the broader Corporate Relations team and the Genentech organization. 
Ability to distill complex information into cohesive strategy
Significant operations expertise and budget management skills
A collaborative mindset and genuine desire to partner, with peers, within CR, and across the organization
