Well come join our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department team as a Fused Glass Instructor .Our mission at the Town of Cary is to focus every day on enriching the lives of our citizens by creating an exceptional environment and providing exemplary services that enable our community to thrive and prosper. Under the supervision of our Program Supervisor you will effectively plan, organize, and implement art activities for youth and adults.

This is a temporary/part-time position with classes being held one weeknight per week, and will run for 5-6 weeks. Classes last approximately 3 hours.


Typical Tasks The Fused Glass Instructor leads a variety of intro to advanced glass courses and workshops at the Cary Art Center and possible off-site locations. The primary position responsibilities are:

Provides instruction and prepares curriculum for teen and/or adults in specialty areas of fused and slumped glass, including kiln firings as needed;

Foster interest in creating art with glass by teaching beginning and continuing fused glass classes;

Instruct in proper use of tools, safety procedures, the art of glass cutting, tacking and fusing glass, the use of molds for slumping and draping and the significance of glass compatibility;

Supervise Glass Studio times;

Serve as part of the pool of instructors for various bookings such as private parties or lessons and events;

Ensures students and member needs are met through personal recognition and providing quality service;

Monitors the well-being of all participants throughout art program;

Ensures that a safe and healthy environment exists for participants;

Administers all Art Center policies, rules, and guidelines including the glass area policies, supply management processes, and safety measures;

Confer with the Art Studios Manager to help maintain appropriate inventories of glass supplies and tools;

Arrives well prepared, with all necessary supplies before class starts;

Performs other job-related tasks as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge to teaching art; knowledge of fused glass design and production, as well as firing schedules and programs; ability to meet the public effectively; ability to communicate orally and written effectively; ability to deal with the public in a firm but tactful manner; ability to maintain and establish effective working relationships with others; ability to organize programs;ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and ability to acquire knowledge of policies, procedures and services of the facility, division and department.


Minimum and Preferred Qualifications Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in art or a related subject and at least 2 years' experience in glass fusing, mold casting, and assemblage.

Requires advance knowledge of glass properties and equipment and experience with fused glass design and production as well as firing schedules.

Prefer applicants with experience in teaching fused glass skills or similar art or craft.

Final candidates will be required to submit a portfolio of their work, or links to websites that display the candidate's work.

Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
