Under supervision, to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction, repair, and maintenance work of moderate difficulty; and to do other related work as required. Incumbents may be assigned work in any division of the department (excluding the Water Division). Incumbents at the Maintenance Worker I level typically work under the supervision of aLeadworkeror Maintenance Worker II on more difficult jobs.
NOTES: The City of Westminster, California is planning to hire one (1) full-time Maintenance Workers from this recruitment process. The current opening is in Parks Maintenance.


Examples of Duties
Job Duties

Performs general construction, repair and maintenance work in a variety of areas including but not limited to: Parks andcivic center grounds, buildings and equipment; streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, medians and street signs; drains, catch basins, drop inlets, culverts, and channels; street tree planting; tree trimming and removal.
Responds to citizen requests and/or complaints; operates a wide variety of motorized construction and maintenance equipment; uses a variety of equipment and hand tools; maintains, tests, and makes minor repairs to equipment; maintains records of work done; computer input; inventory control; orders parts; prepares work orders; maintains daily activity log;removes trash and/or transports debris to dump.

Position is subject to call-out during regular off-time hours to assist in emergency repair.


Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of

Tools, materials, and equipment used in public works construction and maintenance; safe work practices pertaining to the operation of hand and power tools and equipment; additional knowledge/skills may be desirable for specific assignments as follows: basic construction methods; methods and equipment used in trimming and maintaining trees and shrubs; growing habits and diseases of trees; repair, maintenance, and construction in streets or parks departments.

Ability toOperate and maintain a variety of motorized construction and maintenance equipment; use hand tools effectively; understand and carry out verbal and written instructions in English; perform moderately strenuous physical labor as defined in the most current ADA Job Analysis (e.g. working independently with objects weighing up to 125 lbs.) work indoors and outdoors with varied environmental demands.

Education and ExperienceHigh school graduate or equivalent; experience in general construction and maintenance work and familiarity with materials and techniques used in carpentry, painting, masonry or plumbing are desirable but not required.

NOTE:Incumbents successfully passing probation (six months) and who have at least twelve (12) months experience as a Maintenance Worker I (or equivalent) and who have successfully completed at least fifteen (15) college units may be eligible for a promotion to Maintenance Worker II.

Licenses and Certificates

Possession of a valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, by date of appointment; possession of a valid Class B Driver License will be required with Air Brake Certification within six (6) months of appointment.

Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC)Pesticide Certification and/or Playground Safety Inspector Certification are desired but not required. Additional endorsements may be required depending on job assignment. The City provides a 5% incentive pay bonus on top of base pay for employees who possess one of these certificates.

Working Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
