The Network Operations Engineers are responsible for project deployment and 24x7 operations support of Genentech/Roche’s enterprise wired and wireless networks, Firewalls, VPNs, Enterprise Network Security, DNS/DHCP, and Load Balancers. Responsibilities include: testing, installation, configurations and proactive maintenance of a diverse set of hardware platforms (Cisco, Arista, BlueCat, Juniper, F5, Riverbed, Palo Alto). Diagnoses, troubleshoots and resolves hardware, software, or other network and system problems, and replaces defective components when necessary. Monitors the performance of networks and their components. Analyzes equipment performance to determine the need for repair or replacement. Does capacity planning in order to plan for yearly purchases, spots performance issues and bottlenecks, and makes recommendations on network improvements. Creates and maintains up‐to‐date documentation of network design, operation and procedures. Works with vendors in order to resolve complex network issues and ensure that system SLAs are met. Other responsibilities include installation of new network systems, project technical leadership, service management, and providing leadership and mentoring to other team members.
Design, install and configure network hardware and equipment, including routers, switches in support of NA Network services. The network engineer must configure the network infrastructure upon installation. This means the network engineer must have a working knowledge of Cisco IOS, EIGRP, BGP, OSPF and MPLS environments and they must understand how the network is currently configured in order to successfully introduce another piece of infrastructure. If this is done incorrectly, this could bring down the network both locally and potentially the enterprise. All subsequent configuration changes are planned out and implemented by the network engineer, without Engineering guidance. The network engineer must partner with Engineering on all new technology installations. The network engineer is required to review and optimize any hardware designs, specifications
and configurations of any network hardware to ensure they meet customer needs and will maintain operational stability.
Additional Responsibilities include:
Plans and supports network infrastructure. Perform troubleshooting analysis of networks and associated systems.
Monitor system capacity to determine its affect on performance and
recommend enhancements to meet new or changing network demands.
Monitors system performance and implements performance tuning.
Suggests and provides network solutions to business and management problems. Ability to decipher complex network infrastructure configurations to determine if performance is optimized.
Documents all networks for future reference to assist with future troubleshooting
Minimum of 5+ years of experience working in a high availability operational environment.
Requires BA or BS or entry‐level industry certification such as CCNA or equivalent experience.
Expert knowledge of the TCP/IP protocol suite.
Must have strong knowledge of Cisco Catalyst switches (6500, 4500, and 3700) and various routers in a high speed, redundant, complex, large enterprise.
Must have strong knowledge of Fortinet Firewalls, Checkpoint Firewalls, and F5 load balancers in a high availability data center environment.
Experience and knowledge in routing theory and protocols especially with BGP and OSPF configuration and analysis in large enterprises with multimedia applications such as video conferencing/streaming and VoIP
Strong working knowledge of DHCP and DNS
Strong knowledge of troubleshooting methodologies as they apply to resolving complex technical network problems. Must have experience using packet capture devices for network troubleshooting.
Knowledge of wireless technologies including 802.11a/b/g/n/ac protocols,
Lightweight Access Point Protocol (LWAPP), and Cisco Wireless Services Modules (WiSM).
Working knowledge of Voice‐over‐IP and IP Telephony services as well as Quality of Service (QoS) and Power over Ethernet (PoE).
Working knowledge of security devices such as firewalls, proxies, and VPNs in addition to a strong understanding of authentication and data encryption.
Ability to handle multiple problems and prioritize workload.
Experience in designing, deploying, and managing incremental process improvements.
