Job Summary


Occupational Health Nurse:


This position is focused on using a new approach to helping employees remain at work after an occupational injury/illness when medically appropriate and utilizing best practice return to work processes when employees must be off work. The primary responsibility of this position is to facilitate appropriate and timely health care with the focus on employee self-care and remaining at work or best practice return-to-work and the return to maximum functionality as quickly as possible. This is accomplished by providing the employee triage and guidance at the time of a workplace injury telephonically.


The Occupational Health Nurse works with various internal and external personnel to obtain required data and information and to provide requested data and information. AECOM personnel, includes, but is not limited to, members of the Occupational Health Team, Claims Managers, Human Resources, SH&E Managers and Operations personnel. The Occupational Health Nurse will also work with external organizations including a vendor used for physician peer-to-peer reviews.


The Occupational Health Nurse utilizes evidence-based guidelines and employs best practices that require early intervention and setting of realistic expectations for recovery and return to work.


- Provide initial injury intake, follow up and closing on injury cases


- Provide initial contact with injured worker, medical treatment provider and other appropriate stakeholders


- Obtain history of present injury and triage to most appropriate level of care


- Evaluate injury against current job functions, determine mechanism of injury, and take related medical history


- Provide guidance regarding self-care or first aid


- Interact with on-site medical personnel, Human Resources, SH&E, local medical providers and other designated personnel for proper initiation and follow-up of possible work-related injuries and illnesses


- Assist and work with case managers, physician, therapists, contract nurses and workers' compensation insurance representatives


- Perform data entry, electronic scheduling, and reports as requested


- Must be able to work a diary system, keep the diaries current and document accordingly


- Serve as an advocate for the injured/ill employee during the recovery process; provides support, information, and education to improve the employee’s knowledge about their health and self-care, and enhances their understanding of the health care treatment plan and process with the goal of safe return to work


- Provide excellent customer service to employees and stakeholders


- Perform other duties as required by management


Minimum Requirements


- Bachelors Degree + two years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education


Preferred Qualifications


- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing


- Valid and unrestricted Registered Nurse license within an eNLC Compact State and holding a Compact State License.


- A minimum of 3 years clinical experience


- 3+ years Workers’ Compensation, Occupational Health or Disability Management case management experience


- Ability to obtain Occupational Health and/or Case Management certification within 2 years of employment


- Must have positive telephone interaction skills including ability to ask open-ended questions to identify problems and focus conversation for goal directed and time limited conversation


- Must be able to interact effectively with various internal stakeholders and other designated personnel for proper initiation and follow-up of possible work-related injuries and illnesses


- Must have strong listening, written and oral communication skills


- Ability to maintain business etiquette through emails, telephone conversations and in meeting environments


- Strong computer skills including being proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, specifically Word, Excel and Power Point


- Must be technical adept to utilize systems software in efficient and effective manner.


- Strong negotiating skills

- Ability to work in a team environment


- Self-motivated and self-directed with strong problem solving skills

- Telephonic case management experience


- Certified Occupational Health Nurse (OHN)


- Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN)


- Certified Case Manager (CCM)
