Principal, Services Concept Development

As a Principal on the Services team, you will be part of a small, agile team of hybrid thinkers, actively leveraging each other’s skills and knowledge, with a bias towards action to deliver timely business impact.We will think strategically, envision bold, different and new opportunities for Target, and evangelize these with senior leaders and functional peers.You will be an integral player in establishing the Service team culture, by creating pathways for the team to move from “thinking” to confidently “knowing”.You will work in partnership with strategists / business leaders, researchers and product managers to develop initial hypotheses, design how concepts are prototyped, tested, and iterated.You will translate initial insights and concepts into rigorous learning plans with structured, testable hypotheses; help drive prototyping cycles of increasing fidelity to vet product-market fit;inform business cases for each concept; and provide recommendations for how Target decides to buy / build / partner (or stop) all opportunities.

- Establish, and educate teams on a repeatable, holistic, experience design process for the Services’ portfolio (facilitating research, developing experiments, failing quickly and inexpensively, and helping identify the solution)


- Through collaboration and leveraging a variety of data, understand what decisions must be made, what information is missing to confidently make those decisions. and how to design an experiment to learn the insight that leads to a decision


- Partner with other business designers, product managers, and researchers to crystallize a rigorous learning and prototyping plan


- Use both internal and external networks to “borrow” resources, drive cross-functional alignment, manage critical timelines, design and structure experiments and lead creation and synthesis of materials or other collateral as needed to support assessment of experiments.


- Translate initial concepts and insights into testable hypotheses on desirability, feasibility, and business viability


- Design experiments and micro-pilots for each hypothesis to validate underlying assumptions; articulate the appropriate fidelity of experiments required to validate the hypothesis given the concept’s stage of development


- Apply a wide range of methodologies for testing (e.g., paper, physical, or digital prototypes, user journey mapping, friction points assessments, etc.); help continuously evolve the testing toolkit and teach out concepts to others


- Lead the execution of experiments of a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional team alongside product managers and business designers


- Define key performance indicators and metrics for each experiment; ensure these are statistically significant and that the appropriate signals are being measured given the stage of concept development


Desired skills:


- Proven experience in working with new consumer products, services, or experiences (in either a digital or physical context)


- Strong understanding research and testing methodologies (A/B, provocation based methods, conjoint, etc) and familiarity with agile development and lean startup methodology


- Strong experience in using design tools including “design thinking” or related innovation methodologies


- Understanding of retail and digital business models and monetization funnels prevalent in marketplace, SaaS, subscriptions, and omnichannel / online + offline


- Lead cross-functional pod-teams to validate concepts, including business designers, experience designers and engineers


- Translates insights into actionable strategic direction


- Strong ability to deal with white space and ambiguity


- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to variety of audiences


- Strong sense of ownership and problem solving skills.Self-motivated.

Desired background:


- 4-year college degree + post graduate degree (MBA or advanced degree strongly preferred)


- A minimum of 5 years of work experience after graduate school ideally in leadership roles.Equivalently10+ years of experience with strong emphasis on digital, ecommerce, or technology related field in lieu of post graduate degree


- Prior experience in project leadership with a top management, design innovation, research, or technology consulting firm (McKinsey, Bain, IDEO, Doblin, etc.) or in a Fortune 100-level corporate innovation group ideally with subject matter expertise in digital oriented businesses or technology


- 5+ years of directly leading teams through a systematic approach to strategic problem solving including: define/ reframe key questions, develop hypotheses, structure quantitative and qualitative analyses to develop insights, formulate well-founded recommendations, and communicate recommendations to leaders at all levels of the organization, including senior executives


- Experience in consumer and design research and testing methodologies including experience in prototyping techniques and innovation frameworks


- Demonstrated success working closely with senior executive leadership


- Proven ability to navigate and influence internal and external networks; brings a strong horizontal (peer) internal network
