POSITION OBJECTIVE

The qualified candidate is responsible for the supervision of research projects in the fields of oncology and onco-immunology (specifically preclinical models of immunotherapy of breast cancer and tumor-associated immune microenvironment in solid tumors) in all their aspects. This includes experimental planning, data analysis, oral and written presentation of the results to the Faculty Mentor, collaborators or external parties, writing and revision of manuscripts for publications on scientific journals and of grants proposals for funding from the main funding entities (NIH, NCI) as well as foundations and private donors. Mentoring and training of graduate students is required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Design and develop projects and experiments. Must have knowledge of the scientific significance of the project/experiments, according to the latest scientific discoveries in the field, identification of the finalities of the main project/s, including definition of priorities and resources (instruments, reagents, animals) required to complete the tasks.
- Conduct in vitro and in vivo experiments including eukaryotic and bacterial cell culture, nucleic acids and protein extraction, electrophoresis, proteomics, PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and real time qRT-PCR for DNA analysis, flow cytometry, animal microsurgery and pharmacological treatments as required by the project (injections – sub-cutaneous, intra-peritoneal, intra-venous-; tumor implant/explant), in vivo imaging, cell transfection, bright-field and fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, histology and immunocytochemistry.
- Analyze data using specific programs and analysis procedures, including evaluation of reproducibility and reliability.
- Present project results to supervisors, collaborators, or external parties. Organization and presentation of data collected (as charts, figures, statistics), preliminary analysis of the results in correlation with the main finalities of the task/project, planning of future experiments/projects. Oral and poster presentations for meetings, including international conferences. Write manuscripts/reviews and funding applications. Manuscripts for submission to scientific journals or reviews includes data selection and critical organization of the final manuscript. Manuscripts for peer-reviewed scientific publications must contain an introduction explaining the initial hypothesis, preliminary discoveries about the main topic, results supporting the main hypothesis, explanation/comment of the scientific importance of data collected. Writing literature reviews on specific topics as a single author or collaborator: requires a retrospective analysis of all the scientific literature about the main topic and a critical description of the major discoveries accomplished at the time of writing. Funding applications include critical organization of data and results in charts and figures, writing/revision of the final application or specific sections, critical and updated knowledge of the most recent discoveries in the field of interest.

- Assist collaborators or staff members in experiments planning or execution, decision-making, mentoring, development/optimization of instrument settings and work strategies.
