Role Value Proposition:
This senior counsel will primarily provide legal advice to MetLife’s U.S. group disability insurance business. The attorney will focus on legal questions and issues regarding the regulation of group insurance products and advise on legal issues relating to product development and design, marketing, sales, and administration. The attorney will also advise on issues relating to MetLife’s administration of customers’ various family and medical leave programs.
Provide legal support in connection with U.S. group disability insurance and absence management services.
Assess and communicate legal and regulatory risks associated with U.S. group disability insurance and absence management services, and counsel the business partners on ways to effectively mitigate such risks.
Conduct or coordinate research regarding all legal issues relating to U.S. group disability insurance and absence management services.
Draft or review a variety of documents, including claim notices, regulatory filings, and other communications and marketing materials.
Draft and negotiate customer, third-party administrator, and vendor agreements.
Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:
Law degree (J.D. or equivalent) and bar admission required with a minimum of five years of relevant legal experience, preferably with a strong record of in-house success.
Deep subject matter expertise in most or all of the following areas: group insurance, employee benefits, and ERISA.
Ability to handle complex legal matters with minimal oversight while escalating significant issues in a timely fashion.
Sound judgement, a high degree of professionalism, and an ability to prioritize and adhere to deadlines.
Communicates clearly, concisely and persuasively with a variety of internal stakeholders (corporate business partners, team members, functional colleagues, etc.).
Works collaboratively and builds effective partnerships.
Prior experience advising on group disability insurance, as well as experience with state and federal family and medical leave laws.
