REPORTS TO: Associate Director, Charitable Giving Strategy (Corporate Relations)
The Senior Manager II, Charitable Giving, will be responsible for overseeing, developing, and implementing grantmaking strategies - via scientific project support, fellowships and career development awards, and scientific meeting support - to improve care quality, strengthen patient experience, and improve patient outcomes across Genentech’s current and emerging therapeutic areas. The individual create and implement grantmaking strategies with the potential to deliver significant and measurable patient impact, and that differentiate Genentech and strengthen corporate reputation.
As a member of the Charitable Giving team, the Senior Manager will steward a seamless transition of the research and fellowships grants portfolio from Medical Affairs to the Corporate and Employee Giving team, ensuring strong strategic and budget oversight, effective internal and external relationship management, and commitment to patient impact and business alignment.
The Senior Manager will be responsible for engaging with stakeholders across the organization, including leadership from Medical Affairs, PD, Government Affairs and MCCO to inform the creation of multiyear strategies for charitable giving within the care delivery sector.  Potential grantees will include non-profit health systems, academic institutions, physician networks and public health organizations. The senior manager will be leverage a deep understanding of the evolving external healthcare landscape, unmet patient needs and Genentech priorities to appropriately drive business value through charitable contributions.

Set overall strategy and manage budget across research and fellowships portfolio, in consultation with Corporate Giving leadership and key internal stakeholders
Ensure alignment of research and fellowships portfolio with overall charitable giving strategy and approach
Evaluate and monitor trends as related to priority areas and Genentech’s therapeutic areas of interest; identify opportunities for innovative investments and partnerships with the potential to improve care quality, strengthen patient experience, and improve overall patient health outcomes
Develop and oversee the grants portfolio, identifying prospects, shepherding grantee relationships, and conducting thorough due diligence
Oversee cross-functional internal teams and/or internal stakeholder relationships critical to informing, reviewing, and providing feedback on grant decisions as appropriate
Build and maintain strong relationships with key grantees and external partners essential to delivering on the goals of the strategy and extending impact beyond individual grants
Evaluate grantmaking strategies, developing and communicating insights to inform strategic decision-making, internal, and external communications
Integrate philanthropic best practice across the portfolio, seeking opportunities to drive improvement within and beyond the research and fellowships portfolio
Ensure overall compliance and policy alignment of the grants portfolio
Support special projects within Corporate and Employee Giving and/or Corporate Relations as needed
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Graduate or healthcare-related advanced degree (MD, PhD, MPH, PharmD, RN) preferred
10 or more years’ relevant experience
5 or more years in corporate philanthropy or private foundation program management and grantmaking, ideally with a healthcare focus, aligned with Genentech’s therapeutic areas
Brings in-depth knowledge of Genentech’s disease state(s) to the development of Genentech's strategy for research and fellowships grantmaking; must demonstrate knowledge of, or aptitude to learn new / relevant disease state(s) aligned with Genentech’s business
Possesses strong business acumen; has a sound grasp of the pharma/biotech industry and understands Genentech's business model and its position within the wider external marketplace
High-level proficiency of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Business travel for internal and external meetings as required.
Skills / Abilities:
Seasoned, strategic professional who leads with a partnership approach and drive toward excellence.
Demonstrable analytical rigor and passion for the patient/health impact
