EH&S Senior Specialist

We have an exciting opportunity in the EH&S department.  We are building a world class EH&S team here in Gilead.  You will be working with a highly motivated and cross functional team to build a proactive Safety culture and execute exciting initiatives.  We are looking for a self-starter with superior analysis and problem solving skills ranging from simple to complex situations.  This individual is expected to explain information and influence others to secure successful implementation of EH&S programs and directives as assigned. 

Duties/Responsibilities General to the Department:

The EH&S Senior Specialist will work and act as an agent of change while working effectively to ensure compliance and implement best practices as appropriate.  Basic essential duties for Department staff include:

- Injury and Illness investigations, root cause analysis, and trending
- Providing general and program specific EH&S training
- Serving on the Emergency Response Team/HAZMAT requiring periodic 24 hour on-call rotation
- Serving as a primary point of contact for customer groups
- Conducting EH&S Inspections and program audits
- Hazard identification and mitigation
- Adhering to project scope-of-work, budget and schedule
- Exercising judgment to determine appropriate action
- Providing solutions to significantly complex problems
- Working proactively and collaboratively with all EH&S team members in a matrix project format to ensure that EH&S Program and project goals are met
- Influencing change in a complex environment
- Demonstrating competent negotiation skills when dealing with challenging situations
- Customer Service
- Providing responsive customer service when needed in the form of technical support, training, program development and EH&S program implementation
- Presenting findings and recommendations to management while ensuring alignment on action plans

Duties/Responsibilities Specific to the Role:

Specific duties for this role are to work independently with minimal supervision to lead designated programs at Gilead Foster City to ensure compliance, efficiency, and world class customer service. 

These designated program duties include:

- Implementing Industrial Hygiene (IH) program tasks that support biopharmaceutical R&D labs, pilot lab environments, and administrative buildings including, but not limited to:
- Respiratory Protection Administration
- Hearing Conservation Administration
- Personal Exposure Monitoring
- Environmental, ambient monitoring, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) assessments and administration
- Job Hazard Assessments and workplace evaluations
- Controls and Work Practices for handling Potent Compounds and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients
- Risk Assessments
- Related Training to these programs
- Written reports based on any type of performed IH evaluations

Required Experiences:

- B.S. in basic (Physical and/or Life) science or engineering
- 6 years of experience in general EH&S and/or industry (with at least 3 years involved with implementing IH programs as specifically listed above)
- Proficient in IH fundamentals and theory
- Familiar with Cal/OSHA regulatory requirements for respiratory protection, hearing conservation, permissible exposure limits, PPE
- Proficient in types and uses of PPE
- Proficient in exposure monitoring strategies
- Familiar with conducting field sampling, exposure assessments, and interfacing with analytical labs
- Proficient in conducting IAQ assessments
- Conducting risk assessments
- Familiarity of engineering controls in laboratory environments
- Providing effective face to face training and ensuring training compliance

Preferred Experiences:

- Certification such as CIH, CSP
- Experience in Bio-Pharmaceutical in working with cross functional teams to address opportunities in laboratory and pilot plant setting
- Experience with controls and safe handling practices of potent compounds and active pharmaceutical ingredients
- Experience in Emergency Response operations
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience working with regulatory agencies in addressing routine visits
- Experience in implementation of safety management system
- Asbestos and lead management
