Best-known as the manufacturer of GORE-TEX fabrics for garments and footwear, Gore manufactures a wide range of high-performance fabrics engineered to protect wearers in demanding environments—from explorers on the North Pole to firefighters, soldiers, and emergency workers. We are looking for a Heat & Flame Protection Technologist to join our research and development team in Elkton, Maryland.

In this role, you will drive the fundamental understanding of heat transfer and burn injury prediction in garment systems when exposed to high thermal assaults, and develop and improve test methods and influence strategy to serve our customers’ protection needs.
The ideal candidate will:
Find excitement providing support to R&D for products that are the highest quality and value in their class
Be able to think independently and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams
Appreciate and develop strong interpersonal relationships
Driving fundamental understanding of thermal transfer in laminates and garments (conduction, convection, radiation)
Developing and improving technologies to serve high heat and flame exposure applications
Developing and testing prototypes for internal and external evaluations
Understanding test methods and developing new test methods when appropriate
Working globally with cross-functional teams to support commercialization of new technologies and global support of currently commercial products
Educating Gore associates, customers, and industry organizations in fundamental heat & flame understanding and test methods
Required Job Qualifications:
A PhD in engineering or science OR a bachelors/masters degree plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant research or product development experience.
Demonstrated experience working with the fundamental principles of heat and mass transfer, along with familiarity in numerical thermal modeling
Experience with test method development
Desire and willingness to learn flammability of materials (polymers, composites, textiles)
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate complex ideas into easy-to-understand concepts for a technically diverse audience
Ability to represent the Enterprise with customer facing experience presenting technical knowledge
Demonstrated ability to be innovative (e.g. – taking ideas from inception to products, patents)
Demonstrated skills in design of experiments and statistical data analysis
And desire to work hands-on
To work independently, as well as part of a team
To travel internationally up to 10%
Desired Job Qualifications:
Heat & Flame or Flame Resistant industry exposure (products and attributes, materials, tests, and standards)
At least 2 years of relevant experience
Understanding of flammability of materials (polymers, composites, textiles)
Current and active involvement / awareness of developments in the field (materials, test methods, regulations)
