Sociology and Anthropology – Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for up to two Visiting Assistant Professor positions in Sociology beginning in August of the 2020-2021 academic year, with possible renewal up to a total of three years upon mutual agreement.

Augustana College is a selective liberal arts and sciences college of 2,500 students, including 26 percent first generation college students, 23 percent Pell Grant students, 24 percent students of color, and 12 percent international students. Our beautifully wooded and largely residential campus is located in Rock Island, IL, a diverse Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities metropolitan area along the Mississippi River with 400,000 residents about three hours west of Chicago. Preference will be given to candidates who have earned a PhD in Sociology; ABD candidates will also be considered. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a dedication to excellence in teaching, a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and the value of a broadly educated person, and the ability to teach Introduction to Sociology and additional courses with in the candidate’s area of specialization. The ability to teach Social Statistics and/or Social Gerontology is also strongly preferred. All faculty are also expected to contribute to the first-year experience through a combination of teaching in the college’s first-year inquiry program and/or offering January-term courses aimed at first-year students.
