Position: VP & Associate General Counsel, Retirement & Income Solutions

Department: The Legal Affairs line of business is comprised of the Law Department, Corporate Ethics and Compliance, and Legal Affairs Operations, and provides legal services and compliance oversight to the Company, globally. Within the Law Department, the U.S. Insurance Law organization provides legal support for the company's domestic insurance business, broker dealer, funds and variable product units, as well as retirement products and pension risk transfers, and structured settlements. Among the services provided are legal guidance relating to product development and administration, marketing and advertising materials, business development, legislative interpretation, ERISA, and compliance.
The Role: The Unit Head for the Retirement & Income Solutions (RIS) Unit is responsible for oversight and management of a team of attorneys supporting the RIS business, while also serving as the lead lawyer to the Executive Vice President for RIS and other members of the RIS senior leadership team. RIS primarily issues Group Annuity Contracts issued in conjunction with a large plan pension risk transfer, structured settlement products, and stable value contracts. These products are regulated by both state insurance regulators as well as various federal regulatory agencies and related SROs, such as the SEC, IRS, DOL, and FINRA. The RIS Unit Head plays a significant role in the development of the RIS objectives. The focus of the RIS Unit Head is ensure that the associates in the Unit are working together with our business partners are providing strategic legal advice on regulatory and counseling matters to help the RIS business meet or exceed their business objectives. The legal advice relates to all aspects of product development, product management, compensation, distribution, marketing, underwriting, and administration. The RIS Unit provides legal support to all RIS products and services.
Provide strong and focused leadership and management to a team of lawyers who are responsible for working together with our business partners and providing strategic level advice on regulatory and legal matters.
Provide thought leadership to business partners while accurately assessing legal risk and assisting in meeting RIS business goals and objectives.
Educate business partner(s) on legal developments affecting the business and highlight innovative strategies to address developments.
Manage the completion of business partners’ legal work through a team of lawyers. Accountable for ensuring a consistently strong work product and leadership performance consistent with MetLife’s Values.
Advocate and effectively represent legal advice that can resolve virtually all issues and be used to guide future business conduct, as well as to help achieve the Company’s objectives.
Manage a diverse team of attorneys at varying levels including assignment of day-to-day matters and projects as well as performance and career development; leverage the HR Performance and Development Process.
Coordinate with other Unit Managers and Practice Group Leads across the Law Department to develop and leverage talent to support all of the Law Department’s business partners.
Empower team members to drive engagement and high performance.
Maintain strong relationships with senior business partners.
Manage the resource planning and workflow for the unit.
In partnership with U.S. Insurance Law Chief Counsel and other leaders, participate in setting and achieving departmental objectives and initiatives, developing talent, and managing resources.
Inspire trust and respect of the team and business partners at all levels, motivating them to achieve Enterprise and Department goals.

10+ years “in-house” specific business and legal experience, preferably in the Retirement & Income Solutions related areas; should reflect a strong record of success and accomplishment.
