Organizational Bodies Have Telling Smells

Organizational Bodies Have Telling Smells

785fd4ef.jpg

My previous post on Smelly Organizations drew lots of quite interesting discussions and prompted Deb Lange to establish The Senses Hive. One comment that kept brewing in my mind is that of Fatima Williams in which she wrote "Smell forms a triad with energy, place and people. The energy that is present in a particular place with a particular set of people defines Smell to me; in the context of a organization or a home. If these 3 are in a perfect unison then there is fragrance.
Correct me if I'm wrong please. I have witnessed that these three have resulted in forming a project at office or shutting down of projects as well and have resulted in a Happy or broken home".

The comment of Fatima reminded me of the metaphor that organizations are living bodies. Here is the analogy- an organization can be a healthy body or not. If not healthy it shall produce various smells that repulsive to varying degrees. A living body will produce smell from the skin or breath and it shall not be difficult to smell bad odors.

The human body works in perfect harmony where the cells, organs and systems work together. There is a freedom of choice for every part of the body. Should a part be obstructed or denied from its freedom the whole body shall go in disorder. The organization body shall suffer from same. If employees are only to follow deadlines and strict orders they shall disengage as they suffer from the indigestion of orders. Indigestion produces eventually smelly and repulsive chemicals that show in their breath and//or skin. The work environment becomes suffocating.

One more example is backbiting which is similar to eating somebody's dead meat. We know that eating excessive meat may cause the formation of toxins in the body and make it smell horrible. In work culture where backbiting and blaming are predominant we shouldn't be surprised to smell terrible smells. The organization- the place, the people and their energy combine to form terrible smell.

Healthy body organizations circulate information and don't restrict its movement. Like the body converts food into energy so are organizations that convert information into energy. When information is restricted no energy is produced and the organization becomes almost like a dead body. We all know what dead bodies smell like. The human body is amazing in how it sends "smelly indicators" to warn us of the existence of a health problem. The impairing of an organ function can cause the production of many varieties of chemicals, some of which have peculiar odors.  The most common is a sluggish liver.  This cause a rather bitter type of smell that is quite easily recognized when one enters the person’s home, for example. People from outside walking into a "sluggish organization body" will too notice the smell.

One might be surprised to notice that even though organizations with sluggish livers smell horribly; yet people inside stay inside. The explanation is due to the fact that people find it difficult to smell their own breath. They get used to the extent to stop smelling it. Only when somebody sits nearby they realize by the reaction of others that they smell horribly.

It is up to us to keep a healthy organization how to smell to the outside world. It is equally important that we shouldn't assume the organization has a good smell because we fail to smell bad breath. It is only by being clean inside that we make our breath fragrant to the outside world.

The breath of organizations can be very telling about them.

You are spot on dear Praveen Raj Gullepalli. In my previous post I gave an example of the smell of fear. Your writing is true "For instance, Fear can have a smell...a colour...a sound...taste/flavour...touch/feel. I have sensed it in all the above ways". Amazingly, I am writing a buzz on "The Smell of Disengagement". I shall mention in the buzz the analogy of books wherein new books have fragrant smell that may turn into an intoxicating ones if the glue used decomposes into volatiles. Degrading organizations are indifferent.

#24 Thank you Ali Anani' comment. The descriptions of this personality type, from my perspective, is of someone who is "not comfortable in his own skin". As such, he wants to leave, as you both mention, a lingering impression of something that he identifies with quality. He wants you to be impressed with the scent rather than what he is trying to "cover up". From my experience, when I have come across individuals (both male and female) who behave in this way, it results from not being secure in their identity and not really knowing who they are or where they belong. Thank you both for your mentions of me in your comments. Much appreciated. As always, it is great to be able to participate in these dynamic discussions.

Pamela \ud83d\udc1d Williams- you enriched this buzz with your comment. You bring issues that have not been covered in the nuzz or comments so far. I truly enjoyed your comments. Somehow you remind me of the "Tears of whales" by referring to the "perfumes of the whales". Do I agree with you? No question, I do. These people I have noticed. They care so much about their appearances and smell that I always wondered if they could work for fear their suits may show a "wrinkle", some dirt might hang on their shoes and shaking hands with hesitation for fear their hands would get "dirty". They carry an ample supply of perfume and keep using it through the day. You know that the use of perfumes isn't advisable if somebody is sweaty and therefore they try not to sweat to preserve their smell. I draw the attention of Sara Jacobovici to your great comment for you mentioned her in your comment. I take this mention to refer you to the great buzz Sara published almost an hour ago and it certainly shall resonate with you. https://www.bebee.com/producer/@sara-jacobovici/a-sense-of-organization#c1 Thank you Pamela for opening my eyes with your great comment.

I am happy that I gave the triad you suggested dear \ud83d\udc1d Fatima Williams the merit it deserves. It was challenging to explain the triad and I am very pleased therefore with your comment.

You have very beautifully articulated the traid and as we are all living examples I wish to Alert the new joinee's of the corporate and retail world to beware of the SMELL and act wisely. This quote will go the grave with me. It has so much to tell in just two lines " quote Viktor Frankl again, "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

I really meant what you explained Sara Jacobovici. So, I am taking your opinion and I accept your comment. What I meant in my buzz is that organs have a choice sometimes in not functioning as expected such as the cancerous growth of cells. However; I don't question your explanation and I agree that human only have the space to make a choice. I thank you for giving me the opportunity to explain what I meant. Part 3- well, the senses topic and its relevance to businesses is a subject that is worthy of more contributions. There are still lots of opportunities to be mined.

AMazing you are dear Sara Jacobovici as I have just commented on a buzz that advocated for "Expecting the expected". I tagged you. Do I smell the fragrance of your words? Yes, I do. Organic senses are like the human hand - no matter what nothing shall equal them. I salute you and your comment and I agree completely with you. How your mother used smell to tell if here children were healthy or not is amazing. Is there a better example of organic senses? I doubt.

Sara Jacobovici

Part 2/2 Very rarely do I mention a point of disagreement in our exchanges, Ali Anani, but I respectfully wish to look at the following concept. You write, "There is a freedom of choice for every part of the body." Here is where I differentiate between the organic nature of our body, the organs, cells, and human nature when it comes to freedom of choice. The various components and elements that make up our physiology have clear functions and strategies. They perform according to their function in the best way possible under different circumstances. But, they do not have freedom, or choice. These are human traits that come from the human capacity to interpret and give meaning. What makes us an incredible species is our capacity to choose, our freedom to choose, always, no matter the circumstances. I need to quote Viktor Frankl again, "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." Our choices are influenced by the health or unhealth of the place in which we work. The irony is that in this modern world of technology, the sense of smell is one of the hardest to be reproduced artificially. One of the aspects of why the sense of smell is so complex is that it is connected to memories, subjective, personal memories, and so our behaviors are often in response to a memory verses to the present situation. And so it continues....do I smell a part three Dr. Ali?

Sara Jacobovici

Part 1/2 You have expanded tremendously on your previous buzz Ali Anani. The complexity of smells to determine the state of health is crucial. Before our medical devices, Doctors needed to train in interpreting the various smells of their patients. My mother, a biochemist, used to smell the feces of her children in the first year of life as she was able to differentiate between healthy and unhealthy smells. Just because we have advanced technologically does not mean that we don't need to rely on our organic sensory system. It may seem primitive to the modern man to smell his environment but if he doesn't, the loss of information will impact on any process of engagement; personal or professional. As you have articulated, the organization, the place, holds all smells being emitted by the people in the environment. We need to be aware of what we emit and what is being emitted and the impact this has on our work.

Beautifully expressed comment dear Mohammed Sultan. You extracted the main idea of the buzz by your writing " thoughts are not addressed or expressed they reach a premature end, then, communication, the org nervous system and the glue that stick all the organs together, starts to melt and release a bad smell". I love your reference to teh smell of grease, oils and lubricants. Spot on my friend.
