Static Concepts in a Dynamic World

Static Concepts in a Dynamic World

CREATIVE SELLING IDEAS

Our thoughts should help us surpass the static into dynamic action. We can discuss concepts until we fully understand, but if it doesn't lead to change in action then it is static. This wisdom from a comment by @Harvey Lloyd that he wrote on m buzz "Avoid Building Concrete Relationships" got me thinking.

A static concept lacks movement or development. In general, dynamic means energetic, capable of action and/or change, or forceful, while static means stationary or fixed.

I discussed a similar issue on a presentation that I wrote on fixed vs. variable (or dynamic since it isn't fixed). In the presentation I gave examples of fixed prices vs. variable prices, fixed opinions vs. dynamic opinions and fixed policies vs. dynamic policies.

f50e6a9c.jpg                                                 Clicking on the image will take you to the presentation

Businesses realize that fixed costs are a real challenge to cope with. This is why these businesses are striving to turn their fixed costs into a dynamic one by being variable.

It is the same with fixed opinions vs. variable opinions. Fixed opinions limit our mobility, increase our rejections of different opinions and freeze us in our current position. Only late we discover that fixed opinions are expensive. Human history is packed with examples in which new theories were shot down simply because they differed from the prevailing ones. When Staudinger came first with the concept of polymers, a famous scientist at the time addressed Staudinger by saying if it wasn't for his earlier important discoveries of war chemicals he would have accused him of being crazy. Only few years later Staudinger won the Noble Prize for his discoveries of polymers. This one example validates what Harvey wrote in his above-mentioned comment "I read posts/concepts that focus on static concepts while we live in a dynamic world. Our thoughts should help us transcend the static into dynamic action. We can discuss concepts until we fully understand, but if it doesn't lead to change in action then it is static".
Sara Jacobovici wrote a great post on "Call to Action: Part Two" in which she defined action as follows:

Sensation(S) + Perception(P) = Meaning(Mn)
Meaning(Mn)to the power of Imagine(Im){Thinking(T) + Knowing(K)} + Choice(C) = Decision(De)
Decision(De) x Doing(D) = Movement(M)
Movement(M){Movement’s duration(Mdu + Movement’s direction(Mdi)} = ACTION
By factoring in the ability to imagine into the equation that leads to action, we can then perhaps see the bigger picture.

Thinking deeply of these equations I find that the reference to power of imagination is timely. When we fail to imagine shall not be able to either decision making or doing- there shall be no movement. If there is no movement then there shall be no action.

I am asking if a main root cause of us to move and stick to current positions is due to the lack of imagination. Or, I would say negative imagination. It is imagination that only sees the current and long-held opinions and concepts as valid for all times.

Can we have great leaders who lack imagination? I dare say no.

Harvey Lloyd- you provoked my mind with this part of your comment "The combination of the 5 senses build a 6th sense called the life narrative from this discernment can emerge or not". Senses emerge- this is a lovely idea. I am sure I shall entertain soon.

The future isn't extension of the past. Many companies fall in the trap of staying in the comfort zone of their successful past. Yes, as individuals and businesses alike we are mostly captives of the past as you mentioned dear Mohammed Sultan. Imagination is seeing the unknown. It is future looking. I find that spending lots of energies on combating or imitating competitors is a declaration that we are inferior to the competitor. Yes, we need creative imagination and innovation for us to succeed and move out of the limitation of copying others. A copy shall never be the original or equal to it.

In the training/learning of discernment, many stupid moments occurred. When venturing into new spaces of understanding you walk differently than in your youth. Having experienced the static mindsets of those in past adventures, you know they exist going forward. The wiser you become in discernment, the faster you can walk. Discernment is a challenging sword. To wield the sword you now must see the target. Even when you put the sword down and need a break the targeting systems stays. The combination of the 5 senses build a 6th sense called the life narrative from this discernment can emerge or not. But once it does, you cant put it back in the box. With discernment we can move forward with arrogance, vengeful or benevolence. I encounter folks who have turned their gift into many things. Within the challenges of sight we must choose our path. Often in my youth i would use the gift for personal gain. Practicing a win-lose concept. I realized over time that this concept came with future wars built in. When i learned the win-win concept i found that each win produced the next.

"It's conquering the fight or flight response and creating a new neutral investigate first response as the natural instinct. " This is a compelling statement. We refer to this as our Auto Response. A response that contains our narrative and emotional ball that flows based on limited understanding or projected intentions. Your statement is a challenge to most. To be investigative within ones own head in real time requires discipline and a core value set that allows for filtering out the auto response. Most of my experience within management and leadership is from construction and small business. When i encounter this auto response i would usually either hand someone a piece of paper with NO written or ask that they work from yes until they couldn't. The piece of paper was in their pocket and gave them courage to continue with yes. In negotiations i could always tell when someone was working through their auto response and seeking understanding or when they new nothing but auto response. A few questions up front let me know which person i was dealing. The dynamic responses were full engagement the static auto responses were merely a challenge in manipulation. Your statement is a transcendent statement. By transcend i mean you have to flow over your narrative to emerge into a investigative state. No easy task and is a journey of years. The gift of discernment is a gift, but is unwieldy in its birth and adolescence.

Your examples are fresh and rich in meaning . I agree and I enjoyed reading your assessment hat some people and leaders have an "hey usually have an over abundance it"- in your reference to imagination. I don't believe this point has been discussed in any detail. We need imagination, but would an oversupply of it be hurting? In general, an over-supply can be harmful. I plan to write a buzz soon on this issue. I love comments such as yours that get me thinking.

I concur, Aly, that great leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs most certainly don't lack imagination or vision. To the contrary, they usually have an over abundance it. Take Elon Musk or Richard Branson, for example. I'm also reminded of some historic figures who fell into the category of your astute assessment regarding, "...examples in which new theories were shot down simply because they differed from the prevailing ones." In particular, the world of science has some good examples: Stephen Hawking was initially laughed off when he proposed his radical new theory about Black Holes. Now science tells us that every galaxy in the universe, including our own, contains a Super Massive Black Hole at its center. On the other hand, Copernicus, the leading astronomer of his day, insisted that Earth was the center of the Universe and everything revolved around it. This passed as conventional wisdom for many years until proven blatantly false. This all reminded of that old adage, "Every dog has his day." Thanks for sharing more thought-provoking and quality buzz, Aly, which is appreciated!

We work with non-verbal students Ali Anani. I am more the business aspect of the school but do set in on enough of our operational meetings to understand. These students are very difficult to help understand the vary basics of human existence. Just to say i am hungry, the concept of understanding they are hungry and then being able to know that you can ask for the problem to be solved. Seems foreign to someone who takes it for granted. This is why i state "Only". These three dimensions are where we interface with each other and begin to form our knowledge into wisdom.

All growth takes place outside of our comfort zones".If we seek knowledge and growth we are bound to be in a state of instability and self-organizing. This is the way to go. Comfort zones should be for transient rest and breathing in preparation for more challenges.

Deb \ud83d\udc1d Helfrich- your summation of the two points amazes me as you have the ability to read the authors' intentions and the message in whatever the author publishes. You are right. Sponging information isn't the way to learn and move ahead. SPonging informations to come up with ones own understanding is what we seek. We are like opal stone. As the stone reflects light of information every one of us sees the reflected light from his/her current position. Just by moving the opal a little we might end up differently as everyone sees now different reflections. Your comment is the opal stone and I am sure many people will comprehend it differently.

The static mousewheel moves with the same energy static electricity zaps us without fundamentally making a difference to the actual motion of our life. A static view of life is noting what people are doing, but this noticing does nothing to change the circle of life, unless we recognize our own stasis http://wikidiff.com/static/stasis in relationship - how do we presume we are actually dynamic in our nature by simply recognizing the stasis around us. If this is engaged inside the walls of a cognitive prison the mousewheel moves faster, the zaps of static electricity become more sharper. The wheel of life is not a mousewheel, the energy of life is not a static zing. The dynamic is not a not but what is, if that what is fully alive and when life awakens us from captive sleep.

Not a steering but a refining aspect of any discussion. Questions, thoughts and statements represent our only methods of learning. #42 I didn't mean to steer the discussion towards a definition of imagination, that is why I used the words connotations and permutations. It just reinforced for me how I can't assume that when I speak of imagination it is perceived in the same way by others. That is one reason questions are so important.

Harvey Lloyd

I think not. But i do think we need to consider that imagination is applied in many disciplines. Science imagines something based a little information and builds a hypothesis. In all elements of existence we dream and set goals that come true when we start with imagination. But keep in mind the goal is amoral, imagination is also.

Ali Anani

منذ 7 سنوات #38

Do we need to go the definitions of imagination. I wonder how many there are. Like leadership and strategy we get confused with so many definitions. The way we define imagination will affect our expected outcome. Just a quick thought that crossed my mind

Harvey Lloyd

منذ 7 سنوات #37

#40
I agree that when we look at imagination by itself we could define it as a place where all things are possible. When we look at moving forward as humanity or within our own social setting imagination is not merely drifting but associated with an outcome. I enjoy both concepts equally. In keeping with the concept of moving from imagination of ideals and into a concept of action, How could we imagine the new place? Could we find descriptors of a place where mankind has evolved to understand itself?

Sara Jacobovici

#16 I do appreciate thinking of imagination as protecting the static as it is being defined in this discussion, Harvey Lloyd. I am also surprised to see the different connotations and permutations of imagination being discussed. It makes me wonder if we tend to place or fit imagination within the different frames of references we find ourselves in as we move through life. I guess I just always assumed that imagination was something more of a state of mind which we "tap into" when we try to understand things in a different way.

Your posts are steeped in observation ,hence True. But you leave a lot of scope for an alternate point of view The reason they emerge is because of this, i believe individuals to have wrestled with groupthink for centuries and realised it was better to seek the leader among those alike and delegate. Then there are those who dream , who wish for an ideal situation of countless leaders and successfully motivate individual initiatives within the collective, like any sports team but the conflict of individuals is evident, while small groups can veil conflict to perform in critical times, big organisations and society find it hard to hide the cracks, which get mutilatedand magnified by chinese whispers, The question arises, what possibly can be changed and how can we be the source of it? What i understand is this, your timeline is pretty huge and your objective is magnificiently alluring,, i have kept that huge timeline for another cause, linked with your purpose but different. Yes, and this is what Sara Jacobovici refers to as pause before taking action. I call it a breathing period. However; when people are surrounded by a group and aren't give the time to pause they tend to follow steps. When managers ask for immediate feedback they give participants no time, but to follow groupthink.

or merely identify the group pressures, media needs analytics, politicians feel the pulse good politicians or leaders understand the vulnerabilities and blend both for a firm response. Whats peer pressure maube collective delusion too. The causes are multiple. The solutions in socio-economic contexts are also known. What is lacking the assessment of timing for action...the loop returns to static vs dynamic...assumptions and so on. Its all a matter of timing.

I wouldnt be so sure of being in the right circle but yes i would back myself because of two reasons. a) If something has a long running impact on the group, the number and persistence of.influencers would be immense, so patiently assess and filter the inflow as it comes. b) Be like water yourself, persist to improve transparency. The assured result is improved functioning and the possible result is improved credibility... Eitherway, its necessary.

I am sensing a shift in the "Force". These styled discussions challenge us to get our thoughts of past paradigms and shake off the dust. Realizing whether they are still relevant today. The outer layers may need a new coat of paint but i think if we look within our core, the values are still the same. Sometimes i enjoy the rusty outer layers as they challenge my pride and understanding when i find new and exciting things that remove the rusty paradigm. Most important is my wife gets to redecorate:)

I would agree that we were vulnerable to emotional attack as a society, if could summarize the concept. Our dependencies were growing through the fifties on efforts outside of our control. Our existence was becoming interdependent. This had a worthy end. Media began to take notice that when the interdependence was challenged society became defensive. Once defensive they could now get them to follow. This is not new but really an old concept used through out history. The difference was the platform it could be launched from. Newspapers, magazines and TV is where the understanding began. Today we have a media platform that the world can know what i had for breakfast in about two minutes. One of the TV shows that explores our brain in an entertaining way, set up four circles, representing the answer to a multiple choice question. They hired actors to stand in the wrong answer. They then brought in others who were unaware of the set up. The question was asked, and it was a simple question, with the instructions for the participant to go stand in the circle that represents their answer. Most people stood with the group, knowing this was the wrong answer. They did not want to be outside of the group paradigm. Interestingly a few stood alone within the right answer circle. I believe that those involved in this discussion would have chosen the right answer and not the group.

What the media merely did was persist like water with information which wasnt too important for attention, but important enough for afterthought , hence piled up in our brains. The events triggered the need to go back to the pile and people were flooded, emotionally overloaded. Persistence is the key for retention in marketing. The media did misuse the situation, purely because people had too many problems or were too laid back to dissect information as it came. This polarisation had occurred socially way before the media bombardment, simply because the laid back vs struggler polarisation was already growing in the society...hence the pile got created.

You are spot on in your explanation. If i could run a little off topic. We need companionship in our existence, both personal (Deep) and social (Relevant). My lay opinion is media has utilized these two concepts to develop polarized groups. Issues, that are issues, have been made emotionally frighting. Establishing the emotional engagement we can now harness the followers into a great cause. I'm back now. Given the "trigger change" concept we first have to create a safe emotional environment for those who wish to work on a dynamic future that supports all the issues in a forward thinking way. The alternative is to help them separate from their polarized view. (Find their courage) This is why i enjoy Ali Anani and many others and the discussions here on BeBee. We fumble around trying to change our paradigm in this way. Staying away from the main stream polarized view points while focusing on issues of a new future, not the future of "who wins".

Thanks Harvey, the objective as a Static point of reference is how we function, the misuse of our dynamism to recycle same objectives in a new language is the real problem, reap the benefits of repetition until we get sick of it. What you say as a limiting imagination, is perhaps a result of our habit to breed conflict between things that can be complimentary. The head and the heart are assumed as opposites, the law and polity are assumed as opposites.. The basic assumption that defines our objective may also be challenged , but with a lot of thought into it. True we are lazy actors, but we must know that we are also lazy thinkers. Thought will automatically trigger action and action auyomatically creates new facts for consumption. We break the cycle and then half heartedly create artificial cycles for convenience. What im curious about is this, you percieve a certain problem that needs an immediate solution, can we think out a solution, trigger a change with the potential of a ripple effect?

I agree here but would refocus on not effort but outcome desired. We can become static in our vision of the future. We are dynamic in defending whatever that vision may be. Movement is always towards something, the something is what i see as static.

Harvey Lloyd

Ali Anani comment into a thought. I believe imagination is alive and well today in leadership. Imagination is protecting the static if you will. Polarized issues of the day require great imagination to defend positions or attack the other side. All behavior has a root cause. My lay persons review....Everyone has a need for life to be static enough for them to grasp the future. But what happens when media and people we respect in media tell us the cliche story of chicken little from their perspective? Our static vision of the future is now laid waste. One would think Americas educational debt would display an ability to take the static disruption and reason through the issues/facts and potential outcomes. Somehow though we fell into defending the static media presented understanding. From my perspective this is a static view, ideas of the future that rest in defending against _______ (fill in blank). A dynamic view would describe a new future or goal that wasn't resting on past accomplishments or failures. Imagine a salespersons opening statement ,"I have come to save you from failure, our product/service line will limit your exposure to the failures of........... Well apparently citizenry has bought this sales pitch. I do not cast a stone, for i can not, i too exist in a group also. Discussions such as these are the path to rise beyond our static defensive use of our imagination.

Yes, and very true Devesh Bhatt. Cycles have different life spans. Being slow, doesn't mean static. You are correct. In fact what we may consider static may be evoked by a simple nudge. Pour a soft drink in a glass and the bubbles cease. Just by throwing say rice or sand grains in the glass and the bubbles start again. Sometimes, we need to do little work to otherwise what we think is a static case to move the system.

well that is the natural case, static in transition..the timeline being different for different cycles, unfortunately we assume slow as static and presume dynamic to be faster than we can comprehend. We can be the source of change, for progress or sustenenance. Change has a ripple effect, we must be prepared for all outcomes. Static can be a point in transition, a starting point where we pause for understanding, unfortunately it is assumed as the finish line and change is assumed as something that needs to run on a different trajectory.
