Purpose; do we have a choice?

Purpose; do we have a choice?

In his article, Simple Rules Are the Anchors for Emergence, Ali Anani writes:

While reading a quote by David O. McKay my mind started nagging me. The quote reads:
We sow our thought>>>> we reap our actions
We sow our actions>>> we reap our habits
We sow our habits>>> we reap our characters
I felt the beauty of this quote with the simultaneity that we may add to it. The main addition is related to our purpose in life and whether we want to be self-centered, or if we want to use our talents and knowledge in growing others. Having a great purpose expands on our horizons and allows more room for interchange of ideas. We don't remain as silos of different talents if we devote them to help others grow. When people grow they help us grow. So, in order to create space for interactions I found myself adding the first line to the above quote to read:
We sow our purpose>>> we reap our thoughts
We sow our thought>>>> we reap our actions
We sow our actions>>> we reap our habits
We sow our habits>>> we reap our characters.
If we have the purpose right, our thoughts shall be right and our actions shall be right. If our actions are rights then we may build healthy habits and build great characters. It is the lack of greater than we purpose that ends up in our adopting bad habits and faulty characters.

Dr. Ali’s buzz inspired me to ask, where does choice fit into this? I offer the following possibility.

We sow our purpose with meaning and harvest our purpose with choice.

In the article, The Connection to Purpose: Why work matters, the author writes:

“In a broad sense, purpose can be defined as "the reason for which something exists or is done." It is not the task at hand but rather seeing how that task fits into the greater scheme of the organization. Employees who see that their work has a direct and significant impact on the world around them are more likely to tackle that work with passion; they aren't just in it for the paycheck.
Developing [a] level of engagement and commitment to a greater purpose is an individual choice and an individual journey.” (Emphasis mine.)

Where does purpose come from?

Expanding on the definition found in the above paragraph, purpose can be described as; “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists; have as one's intention or objective.”

Here we see a process developing from the reason to the intention.

Where does all this come from.? When did this process begin?

As the classic three words suggest, “in the beginning”. In the beginning, we experienced ourselves in relation to self, others and the world around us from the sensory information we received. From the experience, we formed meaning. It is this meaning that we carried over into other experiences that set the groundwork for purpose; we developed the beliefs and values which give reason and intention to purpose.

We can have purpose, but only through choice do we activate purpose.

I give Dr. Ali has the last word:

I see the simple rule of having a purpose to serve others is a cornerstone in our development.

100% agreed Steve Brady. Well said and thanks for bringing this up. Would you agree that we have to be open to seeing or being aware of that which does emerge?

Thank you Harvey Lloyd. I am always appreciative of hearing your thoughts and flattered that they may be provoked by our discussions. From my perspective, purpose is an inside out process; the meaning we have creates a belief that then (to use one of your words) motivates us to choose a purpose. Thank you for making me think some more and for your generous words.

I appreciate what you're saying Pascal Derrien. My bias, however, is that no matter what country we live in, we have the ultimate freedom of choice in the choosing of how we respond to what challenges we face.
